The Travelers Championship Generates $2.8 Million For Charity By Lonce LaMon - August 11, 2016
The Travelers announced early this week that their 2016 Travelers Championship generated a record $2.8 million for charity.
More than $1.2 million of the total came from the Bruce Edwards Foundation Benefit Dinner, which raised money to support amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research.
The tournament, which donates 100 percent of its net proceeds to nonprofits throughout New England, placed an emphasis on supporting organizations that care for ALS patients and conduct research to find a cure. This year’s primary beneficiary was the ALS Clinic at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain, Connecticut.
Jay Fishman, Travelers’ Executive Chairman of the Board, said “I am thrilled that we had the opportunity to help such outstanding organizations as the Hospital for Special Care and the Bruce Edwards Foundation. The outpouring of support from the PGA Tour, the players and the entire community was tremendous. I am deeply moved by what we have collectively accomplished this week, and I hope everyone in the ALS community knows that they are never alone and will not be forgotten.”

Jay Fishman, ironically, has ALS. He was diagnosed in August of 2015 and made his announcement then that he was resigning as CEO of The Travelers. He kept his position as Executive Chairman of the Board.
Travelers also announced early in the week that it will contribute $58,000 to Jim Furyk’s charity of choice in recognition of his historic 58 – the all-time lowest score on the PGA Tour—in the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship.
Jay Fishman and Chief Administrative Officer Andy Bessette congratulated Furyk while Furyk insisted the full donation go to the Bruce Edwards Foundation for ALS Research. Fishman and Bessette pledged half the amount -- $29,000—to the Jim and Tabitha Furyk Foundation.
The Jim and Tabitha Furyk Foundation is dedicated to helping support organizations that lend a hand to those who can’t fulfill their most basic needs. By providing project-specific funding to these organizations, the foundation helps to give food to underprivileged children, offer care for children with life-limiting or threatening conditions, and provide a safe place for children to go after school.
Travelers also announced it will increase its support of the Pancreatic Cancer Research 18-Hole Stroll, held at the Travelers Championship. The additional donation from Travelers will bring the event’s total to just over $100,000, the most it has ever generated for charity.
