Trudy Maurer And Medical Director Make Plea Deal With San Diego District Attorney
By Lonce LaMon - February 13, 2016

Trudy Maurer, the former CEO of Implantium, a provider of spinal implants to workers’ compensation spine surgery patients, has entered a guilty plea along with her co-defendant, Tigran Shahsuvaryan who is her former medical director, with the San Diego District Attorney’s office and Superior Court.  Maurer and Shahsuvaryan were charged by the San Diego District Attorney with 24 counts of workers’ compensation related fraud in relation to excessively marking up spinal implants into the tens of thousands of dollars.  Implantium was based in the California bay area.

Spearheaded by State Compensation Insurance Fund investigators and then the California Department of Insurance, Trudy Maurer and her former medical director have now made a not-yet-disclosed plea deal.  The Court and the District Attorney’s office were closed yesterday, Friday, February 12th and will also be closed this coming Monday, February 15th 2016 in observance of Presidents’ Day.  However, speculation suggests the guilty plea deal requires a restitution payment, fines, and probation.  It’s not known yet if any jail time is part of this deal as was required by a prior 2013 deal made with the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office.

In that deal made in relation to the charges that were filed by the Santa Clara County District Attorney, Trudy Maurer was sentenced to six months in jail, required to pay $120,000 in restitution, and $50,000 in a fine to the California Department of Insurance Workers’ Compensation Fraud Fund.

After the San Diego Superior Court and DA’s office reopen on Tuesday, February 16th, further details on this new guilty plea deal will be forthcoming.
