A Bay Area traffic light claim that jammed a city intersection with liability issues for five years was resolved during the first week of March.
Shuk Chun Chu’s life was tragically taken in 1998 when a traffic signal toppled over onto her while she was standing on a sidewalk at an intersection in the City of Fremont.
The theories assigned to the accident ranged from a strong wind to the pole not being sufficiently secured by its screws.
A lawsuit ensued, and over time, the layers of liability were peeled back.
The list of liable parties included the signal manufacturer, Ameron International; the signal supplier, Graybar Electric; the installation subcontractor, Rosendin Electric; and the company responsible for maintaining the traffic light, Signal Maintenance.
Collectively these parties agreed to pay $570,000. The Chu family will receive $436,000, and the remainder will be applied to the city and general contractor Redgwick Construction for attorney fees.
