Boston bound for Los Angeles was flown into one of the Twin Towers of the World
Trade Center. About 18 minutes later another hijacked flight crashed into the
second tower. Within about an hour, both landmark crumbled to the ground. It is estimated that 50,000 people work at the World Trade Center.
Then close to 10:00am ET a third hijacked plane crashed into the West Wing of the Pentagon. A fourth hijacked plane with an unknown target crashed approximately 85 miles outside of Pittsburgh, Penn.
The Federal Aviation Administration has canceled all flights in the US.
There have been four confirmed hijacked flights that were all
headed to California. Both United and American Airlines have released the
flight numbers and the approximate number of passengers on each flight.
American Airlines flight 11 originating in Boston, bound for Los Angeles had
approximately 92 passengers. Also American Airlines flight 77 originating in Washington Dulles bound to Los Angeles had approximately 64 passengers. United Airlines flight 175 originating in Boston bound to Los Angeles has approximately 65 passengers. And United Airlines originating in Washington Dulles bound to San Francisco had approximately 45 passengers.
It has been announced that the Federal Reserve would be open for “liquidity needs,” according to Harvey Pitt, chairman of the Security and Exchange Commission. Banks will be able to get money to meet obligations.
Analysts say this sends a message that the financial system has been untouched.
The European Financial market was open today when news of the tragedy broke. Following the news, trading fell sharply. Insurance stocks were the hardest hit. This response is in anticipation of the monumental claims
expected from the damage. It is expected that this tragedy will create a
financial burden that will also require many reinsurance companies to absorb the load of damage, business and liability claims.
