| | Forged Prescription Adding Narcotic Results In Conviction In Riverside County By Press Release - Probe Information Services - November 3, 2014
Shawn Edwards filed an industrial injury and received treatment and prescriptions for Naproxen for inflammation and Flexeril for muscle spasms.
Before handing over the prescription to the pharmacist, Edwards added Promethazine with Codeine, a narcotic / controlled substance, to the prescription. The pharmacist was savvy and noted that the handwriting did not match, so the pharmacist called the treating physician who advised to cancel the prescription.
Probe Information was alerted to the altered prescription and Probe’s SIU obtained an Affidavit from the medical provider declaring that the Promethazine was not part of the prescription and was a forgery. Probe’s SIU referred the case to law enforcement and Riverside County District Attorney filed criminal charges.
Edwards was arrested in May 2014 for Health and Safety Code violations pertaining to prescription fraud and forgery, and the claimant was discharged from care. On October 29th 2014, the claimant was convicted of forgery / altering a prescription (a misdemeanor) and was sentenced to 1 day in jail and ordered to pay court fines / fees.
Probe’s SIU has seen an increase in suspicious claims involving the abuse of controlled substances and they have recently had many successful convictions related to fraud for prescription medication. Probe’s SIU reports that we should be aware of any claims that involve narcotic prescriptions and report to SIU instances of altered prescriptions, reporting that their medical was lost / stolen / fell in the toilet, doctor shopping, inappropriate use of the Emergency Room and/or exaggeration of symptoms for the purpose of obtaining prescription narcotics.
Probe Information provides innovative investigative tools including a Pharmaceutical Canvass which can identify where the subject is filling prescriptions to assist with suspected prescription abuse.
