| | DWC Shuffles Its Deck Of Operations By Robert Warne - May 15, 2003The state’s budget crisis is taking its toll on the Department of Workers’ Compensation. In order to adapt to the harsh financial circumstances the DWC has been shuffling around its northern California resources.
As of May 7, the voc rehab cases that were handled in the Santa Rosa office are now handled in either the Redding, Sacramento, Oakland or San Francisco offices.
DWC Administrative Director, Richard Gannon explained that the move was necessitated by the state's current budget deficit and reduction in staff. The DWC doesn’t expect the budget picture to improve much in the near future and has been forced to consider all possible ways to achieve a greater amount of efficiency.
Also May 23, the DWC will be turning off the lights in its Walnut Creek office for good. Much of the staff has been reassigned and will be spending Memorial Day weekend moving files and furnishings to the Oakland office. All cases currently in handled in Walnut Creek will be transferred to the Oakland District Office, where new cases from Contra Costa County should be filed. Cases in Solano County, which are closer to the Sacramento office, may be filed there.
The DWC was wasting space in Walnut Creek after plans for a call center in that location were canceled. Because of staff shortages, the Oakland office has a sufficient amount of space to house the Walnut Creek employees.
