Los Angeles County has once again cast a bright light on some shady dealings in the underground world of work comp. On April 3, prosecutors legally slapped around five suspects involved in an illegal lawyer vocational rehab relationship.

Sami Yasharpour, Jose Cruz Casas, Javier Casas, Ernesto Epinosa and Juan Francisco Leal were all thrown in the holding tank Thursday on charges of grand theft and conspiracy to commit workers' compensation insurance fraud. They’ll be keeping each other company until each can post $240,000 bail.

The DA’s fraud investigators found out that Yasharpour’s Encino law offices would handle workers’ compensation cases and refer its claimants/clients to California Rehabilitation Consultants and Southern California Vocational Rehabilitation Consultants.

The one problem though, Yasharpour had a financial stake in the voc rehab companies. Authorities believe the concealed self-referral arrangement robbed the system of over $120,000.

If convicted, whether they like it or not, each will be getting five years of the penal system’s version of voc. rehab.
