Ron Calderon Expected To Be Arraigned In Federal Court Today On Various Fraud And Corruption Charges
By Lonce LaMon - February 24, 2014

California State Senator Ronald S. Calderon (D-Montebello) is expected to appear for arraignment in Federal Court in Los Angeles this morning, according to the Los Angeles Times.  He is expected to surrender to Federal authorities and then to appear in court.

Calderon was indicted last week on corruption charges.

The 24 counts of fraud, wire fraud, honest services fraud, bribery, conspiracy to commit money laundering, money laundering, and aiding in the filing of false tax returns filed against him are in part due to his involvement with the former CEO of Pacific Hospital, Michael Drobot, who has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and to paying illegal kick-backs.

Michael Drobot, who is no longer the owner of Pacific Hospital, raped the workers’ compensation system for years with spinal implants and spinal surgeries by masterminding a scam that exploited the system.  He set-up a separate company (or companies), under a separate identity and name, but which was in reality his own company, that supplied the spinal implants.  He then marked up the prices of the implants to scandalously high amounts, and thus charged these implant prices along with the surgeries to the workers’ compensation carriers, third-party administrators, and employers.

Authorities allege that Ron Calderon took bribes from Michael Drobot.   Drobot also hired Ron Calderon’s college-aged son to work as a clerk at his company and paid him about $30,000 over three summers.  Calderon’s son only showed up for about 15 days of work each summer.  Ron Calderon is also accused of accepting plane trips, golf outings, and expensive dinners from Drobot.

Drobot then allegedly bribed Calderon to work to delay, manipulate, and stop legislation which would prevent his method of marking up the spinal implants and robbing the workers’ compensation carriers.

Calderon is also accused of taking bribes from a group he believed was a Hollywood film studio.  He was being influenced to mold legislation which would affect the tax basis for small, independent films.   In reality the “Hollywood film studio” was an FBI front and the business associates were FBI agents.

Ron Calderon’s brother, Tom, who is a former Assemblyman also from Montebello, was paid $1 million as a consultant by Michael Drobot.

Ron Calderon faces up to 395 years in prison if convicted.
