Keenan & Associates is caught in the middle of a “he said, she said” scenario after teachers’ union representatives from the Beaumont Unified School District vented their frustration with the TPA to the press, April 14.

The main complaint is that the coverage for district employees is inadequate and the claims process is too slow.

Because of the frustration, the Beaumont Teachers’ Association, as a standard practice, has begun to refer injured employees to attorneys for work comp related matters.

The district is self-insured through a joint-powers authority. Under its current arrangement, ACE Insurance provides the district’s work comp coverage and Keenan & Associates handles its claims administration.

The district does like ACE’s prices, and in comparison to other districts it pays some of the lowest rates in the state.

So whatever arrangement is made, the district wants to find something similar to what ACE has been offering.

According to the San Bernardino County Sun union officials have met with Keenan & Associates representatives to discuss the problems, but the meetings have rendered little progress.

Carol Hunley, Keenan & Associates vice-president of property and casualty told the Sun that the allegations just don’t add up.

It is hard to say where this is going, but most likely once the union realizes it doesn’t have many options outside of ACE and Keenan & Associates, differences will be reconciled and if any mud did stick it will be washed off.
