CA Inmate Suing for Secondhand Smoke Exposure By Michelle Logsdon - April 11, 2002
Askia Ashanti has filed a lawsuit against three leading U.S. tobacco companies claiming he was exposed to secondhand smoke while serving time in Solano state prison in California.
Ashanti, formerly known as Lorenzo Cunningham, is seeking $3 million in his lawsuit. He wants $1 million each from R.J. Reynolds, Brown and Williamson and Philip Morris.
Former prison cellmates of Ashanti have signed affidavits stating they smoked while sharing a cell with him. Prison medical records show that Ashanti has received eye drops and nasal spray since 1999.
This litigation is the latest of Ashanti’s legal battles during his four-year incarceration. In that time, he has filed almost 70 federal and state lawsuits.
Judge R. Michael Smith will oversee the first hearing July 30.
