Legislature Proposes Workers’ Comp Definitions to Include WTC Rescue, Recovery and Clean-up Workers By Robert Warne - April 9, 2002
A bill to cover Sept. 11, World Trade Center (WTC) workers’ compensation claims is moving through the New York State Assembly.
Introduced March 5, S06394 would amend the current state law to include the WTC rescue, recovery and clean-up workers’ diseases and disorders as occupational diseases.
Some of the conditions classified as WTC occupational diseases in the bill are respiratory diseases and disorders, parenchymal disorders, cancer, hard metal diseases, physiological nerve and eye disorders, gastrointestinal disorders and pulmonary fibrosis.
If passed, the bill would cover workers that engaged in any rescue, recovery and clean-up effort at ground zero. These workers will be compensated for disabilities sustained from the proposed list of occupational diseases. Families would be compensated if the disease resulted in a death.
