Trial For Kelly Soo Park Set For March 11th 2013.
By Lonce LaMon - November 28, 2012

The trial for murder suspect Kelly Soo Park at the Downtown Los Angeles Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center has finally been scheduled to begin on Monday, March 11th 2013.

The prediction at the last hearing was that this trial was going to start in February of 2013.  But, now again it’s been clearly pushed further into the future, but at least now a precise trial date has been set.  That had not been done before.

Kelly Soo Park was indicted in June of 2010 for the murder in Santa Monica, California, of aspiring actress and model Juliana Redding.   Ms. Redding was murdered on March 15th 2008.   Ms. Park was connected to the murder after a long investigation which linked her to Dr. Munir Uwaydah, a spinal surgeon who is still under extensive investigation for egregious workers’ compensation fraud in California.

From the moment Kelly Soo was arrested in June of 2010-- after it was determined her DNA was at the crime scene, on the victim, and had no legitimate reason to be there-- Dr. Uwaydah hastily left Southern California and has been on the lam ever since in Lebanon.   Kelly Soo Park and Juliana Redding did not know each other.  Their only link was Munir Uwaydah, who had briefly dated Ms. Redding.  Just several days after Juliana Redding’s father, a pharmacist, withdrew from a proposed business deal with Uwaydah to make compound medications, daughter Juliana was found dead in her Santa Monica apartment.

Yesterday’s morning hearing on this case heard the parties compromise to the March 11th 2013 trial commencement date.  The District Attorney’s office, represented by Deputy DA Stacey Okun-Weise, asked to have this trial start in January of 2013, but the judge, The Honorable Kathleen Kennedy, said bluntly that it’s just not going to happen.

Judge Kathleen Kennedy:  It’s not going to happen.  We’re going to do one of the City of Bell cases.  So, realistically, in January it’s just not going to happen.  I really think the other trial is going to go.

The City of Bell, a small Southern California incorporated city, has been embroiled during these past couple of years in a mass corruption and embezzlement investigation which has brought on numerous charges against city officials for stealing and misappropriating funds.  Businesses and individuals have been egregiously abused, as well, by City of Bell officials.

Judge Kathleen Kennedy:  What is the time frame for this trial?

Both George Buehler, one of Kelly Soo Park’s defense attorneys, and Deputy DA Stacey Okun-Weise, said two weeks.  Then, they both suggested maybe three weeks.  So, it’s a range of two to three weeks that this trial is predicted to last.

Kathleen Kennedy, on the bench with her open robe which showed a purple top underneath, peering out from under her long bangs and chin length hair, again expressed her desire and recommendation for doing a prescreening of jurors with a written form.

Judge Kathleen Kennedy:  I’m not going to make some juror who gets paid for two days sit through a two week trial.

The judge went on to express her sensitivity to the still repressed economy, and that she doesn’t want anyone losing a home or put under financial distress in order to participate in this trial.  Thus, she feels a written form to find jurors who are at leisure and liberty to do a two to three week trial is best accomplished and most efficient in saving time by presenting them with a written form at the get-go before starting the Voir-Dire process.

Judge Kathleen Kennedy:  Ultimately, I don’t think you would wind up with a different set of jurors.

The next pretrial hearing is set for just two weeks from now, on December 11th 2012.  There are further motions to be heard.   More later about the present motions and those coming up.
