Governor’s Valentine Card to State Fund By Robert Warne - February 10, 2003
The California State Compensation Insurance Fund (State Fund) announced internally today that it received approval from the Department of Finance (DOF) to hire its second batch of 350 employees.
“As with the first group of exemptions, the current 350 will be allocated taking into consideration the overall vacancy rate by classification, the criticality of the function, the availability of other means to handle the workload, and the number of pending outside offers that have been made,” said Patricia Smith, Human Resource manager.
In January, Gov. Gray Davis gave State Fund the go ahead to hire it’s first wave of 350 employees by granting it a special exemption from the state mandated hiring ban.
The governor held out on State Fund for over a year until it was understaffed by 1,700 employees. Those affected by the hiring freeze will have to wait and see if the governor is serious about exempting State Fund from the hiring freeze or if this second wave is just a token Valentine card to make amends for all the times he didn’t show any love to the Fund.
State Fund officials are optimistic though and are currently preparing a third request to the DOF for another hot batch of adjusters.
