Hurricane Irene So Far Causes More Than 3 Billion In Insured Losses
By Lonce LaMon - August 29, 2011

Hurricane Irene most likely, so far, has caused between 3 and 5 billion dollars in insured losses, according to the Wall Street Journal article of this morning.

The worst damage from North Carolina to New York is from flooding, and insurers appear to have gotten a little luckier than they first anticipated when preparing themselves for the storm.   The major insurers had stationed rapid response teams along the Eastern sea coast well in advance in preparation for the storms arrival.

Hurricane Katrina in 2005 mounted 109 billion dollars in insured losses.  A New York Times article today predicted that the past weekend’s lost sales combined with the storm damage could result in costing New York about $6 billion.  The national toll could reach $40 billion.
