| | Yolanda Austin, Veteran California Workers' Compensation Claims Adjuster, Passes Away. By Lonce LaMon - May 5, 2011
Yolanda Austin, a veteran workers' compensation claims adjuster, died last night in the early evening. She had been suffering from cancer; and it was a very short term illness.
Yolanda was approximately in her late forties and is survived by two sons who are still in highschool. She also has an older, adult daughter.
Yolanda worked in many claims departments throughout the state of California, both in the North and in the South, and performed many temporary assignments. She started in claims at Kemper Insurance Company as a claims assistant back in 1993. She was promoted to claims examiner at Kemper in 1995 and then began handling a full case load from inception to closure.
In 1997, she went to work for Firm Solutions in Orange and worked on the Los Angeles County Account. By 1998, she was out "working the temp market" and did temporary stints at Buckeye Claims Administrators, Liberty Mutual, Risk Enterprise Management, and SCRMA, just to name a few.
Azzy James, a work comp adjuster who just recently worked as a temporary adjuster for Intercare and LWP Claims Solutions, was employed by Liberty Mutual from 1991 to 1999. He met Yolanda Austin during his last year at Liberty, because she came to work there as a temp. Then, later on in the next mid-decade, around 2005, Azzy worked with her again long term at ESIS in the San Fernando Valley. Yolanda also worked with Azzy as a temp at Majestic Insurance and then again at Tristar Risk Management. They kept running into each other on temporary assignments and became friends.
"She liked to cook," said Constance Cavallo today, who is a work comp adjuster presently at York Insurance Services Group in Oxnard. Connie worked with Yolanda just a couple of years ago at Metro Risk Management in Wilmington, where Yolanda was a work comp adjuster beginning in 2009. That's where she was last employed at the time of her death yesterday. According to Constance, she used to bring delicious dishes she'd cooked at home to the office for lunch.
Funeral or memorial arrangements are not known at this time.
