Kelly Soo Park Pre-Trial Conference Continued. Case Bogs Down Over Continuing Discovery Issues
By Lonce LaMon - January 20, 2011

A pre-trial conference, which was heard yesterday, has been continued for accused murderer Kelly Soo Park in Downtown Los Angeles at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center. The new date has been set for February 8th, Tuesday, at 8:30 am.

Park is accused of murdering young aspiring actress and model Juliana Redding, who was found dead in her apartment in Santa Monica, California, on March 16th 2008 as a result of strangulation.  Park's DNA was found on Juliana Redding's body and in other places in the apartment.  Kelly Soo Park was a key business associate and ostensible employee of Workers' Compensation fraud doctor, Munir Uwaydah, M.D., who fled the U.S. when wanted by Police for questioning at the time Park was arrested back in June of 2010.  She is now free on a 3.5 million dollar bond.

Discovery issues continue to be argued, and the Court has found, so far, that the Prosecution has complied, in part, to the Defense's motion.

The Prosecution continues to demand that certain information they have collected from their witnesses be redacted.  The Defense is filing motions to compel for unredacted discovery. Modification of a condition for release was filed on January 12th.  Motion was argued and denied.

Due to the nature of this crime, which has provoked intense fear in the Prosecution's and Police's witnesses, many of these witnesses have demanded of the Prosecution that certain information about them and from them be withheld from the Defense.

There is also a possible request for a special master to review certain property the Defense is asking be returned.

The parents of victim Juliana Redding have asked the Prosecution for a speedy trial.  Prosecutors are mindful of that request but are not able to get to trial yet because of the Defense's objections to what they described as "wholesale redaction" of Discovery information. Defense attorney Jennifer Keller late last year when the hearings were still at the L.A. Airport court location, described the information she received through Discovery from the Prosecutors as "swiss cheese".

Munir Uwaydah is still elusively somewhere in the world.  Rumors abound as to his whereabouts, and some say he is in Cyrus, an island to the east of Greece and near Turkey, which has no extradition treaty with the U.S.  Others claim he is back working in Southern California, and there have even been a couple of "Uwaydah sightings".

One of Uwaydah's attorneys, Richard Green, told me briefly in a Pasadena court room last December that he thinks he knows where Munir is but that he cannot tell me.  However, he definitely impled--which was my impression--that his client is somewhere outside of the United States.
