WC Costs Fueling Unemployment, Simon Says By Robert Warne - September 20, 2002
Gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon didn’t waste any time responding to remarks Governor Gray Davis made in his new commercial titled, “Roll Back.”
One of the statements in the commercial is, “Bill Simon has fired hundreds of workers—many without notice.”
At a meat processing plant in Montebello Sept. 19 Simon said, “There are 1 million Californians out of work right now, and the fact is this: We’ve got to create more jobs for our citizens,” according to the Los Angeles Times. “We’ve got to lower taxes. We’ve got to encourage the growth of businesses like this that provide important products for our people.”
Following this rhetoric Simon threw an upper jab into the mix. He told reporters that companies like the meat processing plant would be hiring more people if workers’ compensation costs and electricity rates had not dramatically increased so much since Davis took office.
Claims professionals have the best seats in the house when campaigns start exchanging blows over workers’ compensation and other claims related issues. Hopefully this is just the beginning and we get 12 full rounds of action!
