| | More Bad News for Ford's SUV Line By John Millrany - August 7, 2001Ford Motor Co.'s Explorer is back in the negative-glare carscape because of a report that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a second probe of the popular SUV series.
The investigation centers on whether a third rear-seat safety belt is needed following 10 road fatalities in 11 separate crashes that also injured 20, the NHTSA said Aug. 6. Spokesperson Rae Tyson said the agency is looking into a "compliance issue" on the two-door Explorer Sport and Mercury Mountaineer SUVs.
According to Tyson, sometimes a third person will ride in the rear seat, which, Ford says, was designed for only two people.
Ford spokesperson Sara Tatchito said the company has provided information asked for by NHTSA in mid-July. She noted that he car maker tells buyers that the models in question are intended to seat up to four persons. "There's a seat belt for every seating position," she said.
Models included in the investigation were manufactured from 1991-2000. Also being investigated is the redesigned 2002 Explorer.
Even as Ford is also under investigation on a tire-safety issue pertaining to 203 highway deaths, mostly involving Explorers mounted with Firestone tires, the car giant was nailed for a $25.9 million penalty resulting from a 1996 incident in which the driver of a Bronco II SUV became a quadriplegic as the result of a rollover, and the victim subsequently died due to his injuries. |
