| | An Amherst, New York, Man Is Charged After Making Duplicate Insurance Claims By Pauline Grant - November 30, 2007Attempted grand larceny and charges of insurance fraud have been filed against an Amherst man for attempting to collect insurance claims three times for the same accident.
Following his arrest by Amherst Police on Nov. 8, the charges were filed against Robert Vickers, 48, of 187 Mill St., in Amherst, New York. If convicted, Vickers could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
David A. Hahn, an investigator with the Frauds Bureau of the New York State Insurance Department, said the arrest stemed from a sequence of events that started after Geico Insurance Company paid Vickers $1,598 in April on a claim for damages to his 1998 Ford from a hit and run accident.
Vickers cancelled his insurance with Geico, authorities charged, after receiving the payment, purchased a new policy from Esurance and then filed a $3,102 claim for the same accident. Authorities said Esurance refused the claim and cancelled the policy. Vickers then allegedly purchased a policy from AIG and filed a claim, again for the same accident, for $1,493. AIG also denied the claim.
Vickers was arrested after an independent insurance claims adjuster working for both Esurance and AIG told authorities that he had been asked to inspect the same car on claims filed with both companies.
Two counts of insurance fraud and two counts of grand larceny were filed. Assistant Erie County District Attorney John Doscher is prosecuting the case. A hearing date has not yet been scheduled. |
