Voluntary Recall of Baby Walkers By John Millrany - July 24, 2001The US Consumer Product Safety Committee (CPSC) has
advised consumers to discontinue use of “Q BABY” baby walkers, of which 600
which have been voluntarily recalled by their manufacturer, SubTome Trading
Corp. of Los Angeles.
The walkers are deemed unsafe because they fit through
doorways and don’t stop at the edge of steps.
The walker is model number ST-108ST, which is written on the
box. "Q BABY" is written on a label on the front of the walker and
"Made in Taiwan" is written on a tag on the back of the seat, CPSC
said.
The devices are light and dark blue, pink, green, purple and
white. They have one of three types of activity trays: "Finger Power
Training" features a phone and steering wheel; "Music &
Light" features a side-view mirror and plane toy; and "Train
Engine" plays animal sounds and songs.
The walkers are packaged in a box labeled in part,
"Baby Hands” and “Comfortable pad made of TC cloth with front and back
guard.”
Independent discount stores in California, Arizona and Texas
sold the walkers from January 1998 through July 2001 for between $18 and $22.
Despite the potential of serious injury, no injury incidents
have been reported.
Consumers are advised to contact the manufacturer for return
and refund instructions: 888-786-8663; they can also contact CPSC at
800-638-2772.
In another recall, Union Tools
Inc. of Columbus, OH is voluntarily recalling about 3,200 P-Handle hand
trucks. Made of steel and painted red with two inflatable tires, the trucks
have “China:}” stamped across the crossbar of the handle.
According to CPSC, Sears stores exclusively sold the trucks
from February 2001 through May 2001 for about $30.
If the tires of the hand trucks are substantially over-inflated beyond the
recommended maximum 30 psi, the rims of the tire can separate under intense
pressure and strike the user or bystanders.
CPSC said Union Tools has received two reports of the tire rims separating due
to over inflation of tires. Two adult males received serious hand lacerations
and bruises as a result of the tire rims blowing apart.
Consumers should contact Union Tools at 888-808-6657 to receive a free repair
kit. Consumers should only use a hand pump to inflate the tires. Additional
